You can save some money if you purchase the lift tickets before you get to the hill. We're coming from the San Francisco Bay area. The Sports Basement sells discount lift tickets. You can save a good amount of cash if you do it this way.
You can also save some money if you rent your gear before you get to the hill. We found though that we can rent better equipment at the hill. You'll have a better time if you're riding good equipment.
We like to plan our ski trips way in advance, on days when no one will be at the hill. So basically we always decide on a Thursday before a holiday weekend to go skiing. We have no chance with an AirBnB. But since Mt. Rose is so close to Reno, we always end up finding something good for the kids. If you stay outside of Reno, on the way to Mt. Rose, you can usually find a reasonable hotel with a pool. You probably don't want a hotel with a pool after a long day of skiing, but the kids will love it.
We're slow movers. So basically by the time we get to the hill, we're way too late for the morning ski and snowboard lessons for kids. We were a bit bummed the first time we experienced this at Mt. Rose. Turned out to be gold though. We had no choice but to sign the kids up for the afternoon group lessons. Well ... nobody signs their kids up for the afternoon lessons. They want to ski with their kids in the afternoon. So our kids got private lessons for group rates. My daughter likes to ski, so she got a "private" ski instructor. My son wanted to learn how to snowboard, so he got his "private" instructor. This happened for two days in a row on a holiday weekend.
We've done this a few times at Mt. Rose with the same result. Don't tell anyone, but book the afternoon ski lessons.
To save some money, pack a picnic lunch and tailgate it for lunch. If you're going to do this, when you drive into the Mt. Rose parking lot, stay to the right and drive as far as you can forward. Then when it comes time to meet at the car for lunch, you can kind of ski to the car. You'll limit the amount of walking you need to do.
Last Bit of Advice
If the kids want to do some sledding, take a left out of the Mt. Rose parking lot. About 5 minutes up the road, you'll see some parking spots on the right side of the road. You can sled on that side of the road. But it would probably be better to cross the road and sled on that side. Be careful though when you cross the road.
