Get the kids into BMX bike racing at the Santa Clara PAL BMX Track.
Who Can Race
Anybody can race, just as long as you can ride a bike without training wheels. This sport is for both boys and girls of any age. Actually, adults can race too. In all the age groups, you'll see experts and beginners racing.
They do run races for the wee little ones. The bikes for those races usually have no peddles and only one third of the track is used. They call this the strider group. It is for kids 18 months and up.
They really have a great atmosphere there. If the other racers notice you are a beginner, they'll start offering you advice. The people working there will also guide you if you have any questions.
Bikes and Equipment
The track has everything you need to start off with racing. They rent bikes and offer loaner helmets. Rental bikes only cost $5. The bikes are quite nice too.
Everybody should be wearing appropriate clothing. Refer to the Santa Clara PAL BMX Track's website for more information about that.
As mentioned earlier, bikes can be rented for $5. They do ask that you become a USABMX member for the year. They waive the fee for that on your first visit. If you plan on returning, you'll need to become a member.
It costs $10 to race for the night. That price includes the hour long practice session they have before any races start.
The track has a one hour practice session before the races begin. If they kids are nervous about doing it, this is a great chance to introduce them to how it works.
If you wanted to try it out too, this is your chance. Anybody could be lining up during a practice start ... kids, adults, beginners, and experts. So you could try the start with your kids.
For your first start, you will line up against the gate. The announcer will then state when it is time to go and drop the gate. At this point, forget about peddling as hard as you can. Just coast down the starting hill. You will just want to get an idea of how your bike works and how a start works.
Take it nice and easy on your first day. It's easy to get way to confident on your first few practice sessions.
Be sure to call the track, or check their Facebook page, to make sure they are running races the night you want to attend. They might cancel races if they repairing the track or something like that.
All first time racers get a trophy on their first day. The kids will be so proud of their trophy. And they should be. They will have tried something new and different.
